Comment:

 So, looking at this again, I think we're just complicating things by
 adding this button.  The amount of space required to show the data is only
 slightly more than what's needed to provide a button to toggle it anyway.

 Why don't we actually label the lines on the grid so that a reasonable
 readout can be obtained at a glance.  The other details can remain in a
 corner without being very distracting.  If we want to make them slightly
 less "distracting", we could use a shade of gray instead of the bright
 white.
