 They are small; that I admit, but we're trading that off for screen real
 estate.  Fitt's Law was firmly in my mind while designing them.  The
 thought is that they will be used far less than the buttons within each
 toolbar, which are larger and purposefully left along the top of the
 screen themselves.

 The widgets are another story, and while I'd love to have them reach the
 edge of the screen (that's the intent) we are forced to deal with GTK
 controls, which weren't built with the same goals in mind, so I doubt we
 can do much about those.
