 After many more runs with valgrind, I have discovered that the instance
 that crashes is always the one not running under valgrind.  Given that
 rare bugs are often due to timing, and valgrind greatly slows down
 execution, this is not especially surprising.  It's just annoying.

 However, this crash is now very reproducible.
