Comment(by cscott):

 I think a set of icons with standard dimensioning symbols would solve the
 UI problem. It seems like four icons: one with an XO in ebook, and the
 dimension arrowhead pointing to the screen surface, and other with the XO
 in ebook and the dimension arrowhead pointing to the back surface, and two
 more with the XO in "laptop" mode, with the arrowhead pointing to the
 'trackpad' side and to the back of the handle. Then the user would select
 the appropriate measurement surface on each XO, and the XOs would
 communicate between themselves to compute the total offset to apply.

 I think the same icons apply to multiple-person measurements, with the
 caveat that since angle-of-incidence correction is not done, the results
 could be slightly off. But the same indicated measurement surfaces seem
 to be relevant.
