Comment:

As described, the problem is not that OFW auto-boots from USB, but rather
that the /boot/olpc.fth that is on the USB key includes auto-update
functionality. Turning off auto-boot from USB is too heavy-handed a
 solution to the smaller problem

In secure mode, which is the default as of the recent mass production
build, OFW only overwrites the filesystem if you hold down 4 game keys at
 once.

In non-secure mode, the "automatic" filesystem update is mediated by the
"autoupdater" version of the /boot/olpc.fth script, which is not included
in OFW releases. (In fact the autoupdater script is not managed by any
formal process at all, which is a problem, but not one that can be solved
 by OFW.)

The easy workaround is to rename or delete /boot/olpc.fth on your USB key.
