Comment:

 Well upon further investigation I uncovered a number of interesting items.
 The first is that even though Capture db is set to 0 there is still mic
 pick-up.  To get a complete mute I used amixer with the command “amixer
 sset Capture,0 toggle”, the result is that it turns off both L and R
 channels.  So the combination of muting MIC volume, muting MIC boost and
 toggling Captures L an R I was able to create a mute situation.

 The result is that this problem should now be closed but a wiki entry
 would be appropriate given that I am not aware of any mixer activity at
 this point that would allow a child to modify these controls.
