 The most immediate concern is that when the mic is muted, which is
 verified by alsamixer, both arecord and the record activity seem to
 override this. I am told that by default the system is booted to mute the
 mic to conserve power but also by placing it in mute the led does not turn
 on either. So the question(s) who is overwriting the mute option and why.
 Also having a mute option has become an issue in our attempts to verify a
 problem which is that the mic DB setting has no effect on pickup.

 To reproduce, boot the system, verify setting via alsamixer than run a
 recording application.  It records fine even though the setting to mic is
 mute.
