Comment:

 I think it would be good to update to the latest stable upstream version
 of evince for Update2. While doing that we could remove some hacks from
 our fork, try to integrate the other hacks upstream and add support for
 images and dejavu.

 I've read somewhere that the latest evince has substantial performance
 improvements.
