Comment:

 I think with the current display implementation this makes perfect sense.
 I should really  go test it out in the sunlight before I commit to this,
 but I get the feeling that without the backlight most of the chromatic
 information is lost anyway.  If we can get sufficient chromatic info even
 without backlight (now or in the future), then we may have to reconsider.

 This does make things simpler for the time being though, since there is
 otherwise no exposed way to get into black/white mode at all.  It makes
 the assumption that you want no backlight in black/white mode, but that
 seems somewhat reasonable considering the desire to save power as the
 impetus for changing modes in the first place.  It might not cover every
 case out there, but it covers a lot.
