 Alright, this is getting weirder and weirder.

 While I try to see about getting an adaptor that behaves like yours does,
 can you try digging up a USB keyboard and a USB mouse, attching those, and
 seeing if X still crashes on startup?

 My bet is that it won't, but it would help a ton if it did.
