 For what it's worth, we are working on something similar to what you are
 describing:

 lsmeshd is a daemon that runs on each laptop.  It provides mesh route
 information (currently in XML format) when queried.  meshpotato.py is a
 graphical mesh mapper that uses lsmeshd's information to draw the mesh
 continuously.  I'm adding the route quality information to both pieces
 this week as we now have more detailed information available via the
 usb8xxx driver.  It will then draw more of what you're describing, I
 think.

 lsmeshd depends on libgthash, otherwise you should be able to build it on
 most any system.  meshpotato.py runs fine on the OLPC (it needs gtk,
 cairo, and the ElementTree parser).  Here is a somewhat outdated

 output.  We'd like to hook up to dbus in the near future to make it easier
 for other software to use lsmeshd.
