Comment:

The laptop hostname should probably be the child's nickname. We have
already established that it WILL be unique among students in a school in
 early releases.

I've used DHCP to do both: assign a hostname to a machine based on it's
 MAC address,
and provide a hostname entry in DNS for random DHCP clients on a network.
 In the short
term, I would suggest the latter. In the longer term, we will be moving
to (mobile) IPv6 where DHCP isn't used, but static DNS entries make more
 sense.

In the short term, we need to test the laptop OS and application as it
moves regularly through different network environments.
