Just to close the loop on this discussion - one might ask why not just do
an MD5 sum on the USB disk file. There are several reasons:
a) Doing an MD5 sum on the host machine on which you prepared the USB disk
catches copy errors there, but does not catch the possibility that the
host can access the USB disk just fine but the firmware gets occasional
errors (perhaps due to firmware bugs).
b) If an MD5 sum fails, it gives you no information about where the
failure occurred, whereas the block-by-block CRC narrows it down a bit,
which is useful for root cause failure analysis.
