 This 565 stuff sure seems to be killing us. Caching the conversions is
 pure evil: rather than 3 or 4 bytes for 888, we spend that PLUS an extra 2
 bytes for 565. In other words, image memory usage rises by 50% to 67% when
 565 is in use.
