 More information on file sizes affecting the failure: md5sum (mis)match,
 tested over five hops via FTP:

 1200B -- matches
 1300B -- matches
 1400B -- matches
 1450B -- fails
 1500B -- fails
 ...   -- fails
 }}}

 so the problem likely has to do with the MTU size and a potential
 truncation.  We will look further in to this now.
