In keeping with the two-tone color scheme used to represent XOs within the
mesh, we'd really like to fingerprint external storage media such as USB
sticks and SD cards with the identity of their owners. For simplicity,
ownership can be determined as the "first to mount" the media, at which
time a hidden file at the root of the device can be written, containing
the identity information for the XO. This info should include their
stroke and fill colors, their unique identifier, and optionally their name
and other basic information. A standard reformat, of course, would erase
 this identity info.

Using this data, a mounted drive can appear on other laptops in the colors
of the XO to whom it belongs. If their name is embedded, the primary
rollover for the device can read as "Eben's USB Drive" or similar. Using
the unique identifier, the colors within the identity file can be
dynamically updated if the owner changes his/her colors on the mesh. (Of
course, you could also simply update it each time it is mounted on it's
 owners machine.)
