Comment:

 Current theora implementations are slow. There's no reason they can't be
 as fast as h.263, but programmer interest has been an issue.

 That said, there has been some performance work this year. You don't say
 what version you built against, but 1.0alpha7 is faster than earlier
 releases, and decode is considerably faster with current svn.
