I succeeded in debricking the unit using the "clone" method - removed the
5-pin serial connector from another board (somehow managing not to destroy
the connector) and put it on the new B3 board. Ran "clone" on my preB3 to
copy its SPI FLASH into the new B3.
Now the new B3 is running q2c14h.rom and the keyboard is working. Note
that the keyboard didn't work the first time after powering up, but that
is a known issue that happens on other systems too.
Oh, maybe I have an explanation for why it got bricked in the first place.
My USB key currently has an olpc.fth that executes the "flash" command.
It is quite possible that, while testing the keyboard, I powered off (with
the button) in the middle of a flash command, thinking that it was just an
ordinary OS boot.
That suggests that the power button should be disabled during flashing.
