 I tried too with no success. Following
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Establishing_a_Mesh_Portal the mesh portal wants
 to hand off IP addresses by way of DHCP. On releases 5xx (probably before,
 but clearly after 406) when you join the mesh you get an IP by way of
 link-local address. So there is no layer3 visibilty between machine acting
 as mesh portal and the other XOs.

 This cleary is not a bug, we should pick another place to discuss how to
 get mesh portal running on devel builds (since they have the cool
 features) and close this up.
