 Additional information, thanks to suggestions from dwmw2 in #olpc.  The
 following Forth word sequence turns off the backlight fully on the unit
 showing the problem:

 1 dcon@ f7 and 1 dcon!
 }}}

 dwmw2 concludes that the DCON PWM bits are at fault.
