 Thank you for the clarification about the lights.

 The problem turns out to be that all five of the wall adapters are dead
 (confirmed with a volt meter).

 Using the B1 adapters allows the B2 laptops to charge and boot just fine.
 Perhaps we got a bad batch of adapters?  It's strange that they did work
 for some time (we had the orange light and so on) and then we wound up
 with the 'no light' situation and dead batteries.

 Now that I can get them to boot, I will look up which firmware is on these
 and now I can also safely upgrade it.
