Comment:

 After extensive testing, I'm convinced it's a hardware or firmware problem
 in the ALPS side.

 Specifically, swapping the touchpad assembly with another one cured the
 problem on the laptop donated to science by rbwjrw.

 We may want to ship this unit to ALPS for further investigation.
