 Can you think of any other circumstances which could cause this?  I feel
 like it's a bad idea to allow the laptop to run in a mode that won't save
 any of the work, especially since saving is supposed to be automatic and
 the kids will be used to that.

 I'd prefer to think of this as an edge case with a cause which is severe
 enough that some other action is required to get the machine back to a
 fully functioning state, instead of a distraction that we should try to
 work around.
