Comment:

 Marco, if we're going to try this out in practice do you want to take this
 ticket off my hands?   We'll still need a design for the palettes
 themselves assuming this technical approach works well, but I have #1675
 for the file dialog and can open a another ticket for the sharing
 interface.  Both of these visual designs will likely find their way into
 the wiki.

 Dan, if you are going to help out with implementation since you've had so
 much input, feel free to snatch it out of Marco's hands as well.  I'm sure
 he wouldn't mind...
