the future the reformatting step may also provide a way to name the device
and assign it a color pair for identification in the interface. This
should only appear for writable media.

step?
Well, any UI which allows renaming/color assignment will naturally have a
"reformat" button. It can also have a "cancel" button as well to cover
that case. The window itself can contain some small text indicating that
it the action will erase any content on the device.
