 I tried adding "files  /etc/mtab" to /etc/rwtab.  That seems to have
 worked - after rebooting, /etc/mtab was no longer on mtd0, but it was
 readable and contained the right information.

 Perhaps the original suggestion of linking /etc/mtab to /proc/mounts would
 have worked too; I don't know.
