Comment (by Eben):
This is actually already spec'd out in the HIG. Journal entries are
supposed to act as progress meters when they are in the process of being
saved, being copied, being downloaded, etc. As such, an entry should
appear in the Journal immediately when the copy starts, and that entry
should have a visual means of indicating it's progress. Once complete, it
will transition to the appearance of a standard entry.
This should definitely be done async, if possible. Blocking on the entire
UI is a bad idea, especially since it's a darn good idea to have a cancel
button on any type of copy/download operation.
I'm attaching a visual design for this, since we didn't have one before.
The basic idea is to keep the icon and title as usual, but replace the
space that's usually given to the people and the date with a progress
meter and a small cancel button. No text will be needed for either the
meter or the button. The in-progress entry will have the "absent and
inactive" visual style, with a gray stroke, no fill and button gray text
for the title string. It not be active in any way, apart from the cancel
button.
