Comment:

From the beginning, we've been trying to create a high contrast interface
for a number of usability and accessibility reasons. That aside, the
previous set of buttons - black with white dots - nearly blended into the
frame background, and completely blended into the rollover state. These
are things we need to avoid.

I'm not sure that I can agree with any amount of visual distraction,
because the frame itself lives just off screen and out of the way,
completely eliminating any visual distraction whatsoever until it's
invoked. Regarding the buttons in question, they are actually lower
contrast with respect to themselves (white/dark gray vs old black/white),
so the only real change in contrast is between the buttons and the
background, which was needed, and is consistent with the visual style for
buttons we've been using everywhere else.

Ugliness is subjective, but feedback is good. I'm not sure why dots in a
ring is "creepy" though; are there particular personal or cultural
associations that make it so? These are the types of things we can't
always foresee, so feedback is appreciated.

This is not a high priority item, and especially not so until its clear
there is a need for a change outside of personal tastes.
