 With an ext3 USB disk instead of ext2 as the instructions require ...

 The first OFW activation detected the attached USB disk and booted the OFW
 from it.  The second OFW activation hung on an autoreinstallation, the
 message on the display was:

 Problem reproduced on all three units.

 Workaround: booting OpenFirmware from NAND worked fine.
