Testing summary - Auckland New Zealand, 26 June 2010

Who: Team OneBeep and their mentor, Tom, Tabitha, Fabiana, Leslie, Mark,
Calvin, John, Nevyn, Abhishek

Tested etoys 113 on build 180py
None of the testers had any experience with etoys prior to this test so we
started with the demo/tutorials. There was much confusion over how to get
this working. We worked together to learn the activity and figured out how
to draw, change colours. We figured out copy and move, resize and rotate.
But got frustrated with when we stop the activity it forces a save, but no
description or tags, or ability to give it a name. When we tried to open
etoys again we were opening our messed up versions, and it took a while
before we got it that we have to point at etoys in the activity ring and
choose to open a new etoys, then we could start the tutorials again.
We shared with neighbourhood and could join, but sharing did not allow users
to see each others drawing. (We were connected via a network started by
another XO).
We could not get our heads around what it was doing in the journal. most of
the time it didnt make a new journal entry when we stopped the activity.
One XO-1.0 didnt have any journal entry at all, and the log was 0 bytes.
We got some error messages. This one appeared during a tutorial - it said
"an error has occurred; you should probably just hit abandon sorry". We took
photos of the debug screen if someone wants it I can upload. We restarted
the activity.
I think this activity has a very steep learning curve.

Tested infoslicer 8 on build 180py
made a page on one XO-1.0 and then accessed it from browse as a book. Then
we tried "send to" friend from the journal to three XO-1.0s. One of the XOs
opened from the journal using Browse, another tried to open in etoys. The
one that opens in browse does have books appearing on the home page, but the
one that opened in etoys, when you open browse it doesn't show books in the
top left. Third XO was sent the file and it opened it from journal in browse
so can view it, but that one also didn't show books in the browse home page,
though now it does show books since it has opened a book. How does it decide
what default activity to open with? Only the first XO had infoslicer8 on it,
the other 3 did not have the activity installed.

Tested 180py and 260py working together - both took photos (and shared in
record) and added their photos to a shared write, one successfully added a
paint picture, the other tried to add an object from social calc but we
could not manage that as not sure how to save anything out of social calc.

Team OneBeep and Tom worked on getting the radio project working on the XO.
Their software is written in .NET. Their software uses a windows native dll
for recording sound so I installed wine, wine-oss and then the windows
version of mono inside wine. The OneBeep software almost worked, but seeemed
to erroneously detect the start of a transmission. The OneBeep team are
going to do further debugging now the application works on the XO.

We started investigating running the school server. We want to install it on
an eee 701 with a 16GB SD card. We spent most of our time trying to get the
EEE to boot from USB -- it turns out a usb disk is a type of hard disk, not
a removable disk. After some mucking around with the installer options,
installation started. We'll let you know next time if it works (it's still
installing).

We placed an order for some replacement parts for the XOs with
ilovemyxo.comas we have broken battery so thought time to order a few
things. :-)

Had more questions this week about placing order for a couple of XOs here
and there from different schools around the country. They really want to
take a closer look at the XO so we really need to figure out how to get an
order in and financed and how we handle import rules and consumer guarantees
etc etc.

Thanks
Tabitha
