One of the pieces to this was going to be the identity service, which
would have provided some measure of notification if a buddy apparently
changed name or color (from the user perspective).  Is that just getting
dropped or is that still on the table, and if it is, what's the status?
If there isn't going to be an identity service, we either do nothing and
suck up impersonation, or we have to come up with a backup plan.
