First let me apologize. Apparently my last email sounded like I was saying things weren't moving fast enough on GCoprimpris and Teachermate. That was not at all what I was getting at. They are awesome functionality that a million kids are waiting for, but that describes everything we do so there is no particular deadline in my mind.

I wrote because when I read the teachers guide and saw the admin side my instinct was that is should be plugged into Moodle somehow. By somehow I would consider porting the admin package to the XS and implementing single sign on with Moodle and creating a Moodle plugin. Alternatively perhaps writing something new directly for Moodle that put the info into Moodle gradebook or a moodle table.

I had a feeling that our Moodle people didn't even know this work needed to be done and that the Sugar Dev people might not consider Moodle as a solution.

On the other hand, the honest truth is I haven't even seen the code in action, just read the manual and its been 5 years since I've programmed and there may be other alternatives I haven't considered. So rather then saying "you should do it this way" I tried to start a conversation about the plan.

Instead I came off as pushy and impatient. I am sorry. I absolutely know how hard everyone is working. My goal was to make sure the right people talk to each other so that it didn't get implemented the hard way. Also its my belief that there are tons of people in the world with Moodle experience and if Moodle integration or rewrite into Modole is the way we want to go this would be a nice self contained project for an advanced beginner Moodle programmer who wanted to gain skills.

Remember one of my current hats is front line on our volunteer ads and I'm also talking to a group that is interested in organizing high school students to volunteer on open source projects. I'm collecting these types of at least somewhat self contained projects here: http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Ideas_for_Projects.

And yes, I know how hard everyone is working! Thank you.

Martin,

Work is going on on the Sugar side to bring the TeacherMate content to Sugar. A Sugar machine will replace the $50 little box. The Teachers Guide hints at the class level backend they have written that lets teachers give different kids different levels of material. Since this is designed for K-2 and supposedly aligns closely to basal texts I think this functionality will be fairly important.

I attached the TEAchermate guide. Here is a link to the GCompris admin: http://gcompris.net/wiki/index.php/Manual#Administering_GCompris

As we go with GCompris and Teachermate, should we also use the same philosophy for Karma?

Thanks,
Caroline

On Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 6:14 AM, Martin Langhoff <martin.langhoff@gmail.com> wrote:

That's news to me! I've played w gcompris bit but never been aware of
a distinct teacher mode.

Is there any reference / overview / tour I can read and follow?

Is teachermate a Sugar activity? A quick google shows a USD 50 device
that I'm not sure if it has a webbrowser, network, etc.
cheers,
