In terms of indexing and search, I should also mention that OSM itself uses something called http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Nominatim
Switching to this from Whoosh would obviously involve changes to iiab.

I assume that with new geo data the index will also need to be regenerated.  Whoosh 2.6 is the last version compatible with the current index.  Hopefully the new index will support later versions of Whoosh.
