Or do these long file names contain spaces or other unusual characters?

(There's a mechanism by which spaces with file names can fail to be
started by plugins, but I've no idea if that is the mechanism that is
happening for you.  It is usually easily fixed in the code, and a
workaround is to remove the spaces from the file names if possible.)
