We exchanged notes about what it took to take an old schoolserver
build and disable the network services.   There was never a more
comprehensive writeup as it worked at that point.

We can't help you without knowing your network topology and how
you inserted the XO into it.   I suspect that what you have done is
connect the WAN port of the XS to your internal LAN, which is where
the laptops are also located.   This will fail, due to a number of  
reasons.

I'm told that running /usr/bin/xs-swapnic might fix your problems.
