It should work out-of-the-box, no special configuration needed.

 - what version of the XS have you installed?
 - did you follow the installation instructions? There are important
steps to follow there...

I recommend you try with
http://xs-dev.laptop.org/xs/other/OLPCXS-0.5.1-dev03-i386.iso - (that
is the release candidate for 0.5.1, a bugfix revision to 0.5 ) and
follow the instructions at
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS_Installing_Software
