I've used two 1m dishes between two active antenna, and they perform
very well.  I've also used one 1m dish on an active antenna and an XO
within the beam.

However, non-trivial altitude is needed to reach a longer distance, and
in the deployment scenarios of OLPC there is very little need for this
kind of directional signal.
