Just a note of caution

My understanding is that the XO's only protection against reverse voltage is an internal fuse on the circuit board.

If using a home made system (like alligator clips on the battery terminals) there is a real risk of damage. In this case the XO lead could have a series diode in it when made up, even though it wastes 0.7V of precious voltage.
