It sounds like it may be harmonics - non sinusoidal current.
I have a green 1.0 wallwart and a white 1.5 wallwart, I can measure their current waveform. But what we wont have is data on the generators on their tolerance to harmonics.
Power factor, as in phase shift, is probably not a problem. You can correct it with capacitors as said. (But thats how I blew up the MOVs with my generator, trying to run an oversized load and adding capacitors). Capacitors may also help on harmonics a bit too because they are also low pass filters
