Abstract:<br>
This talk will cover the basics of Universal Design for Learning and<br>
show how applying principles of UDL to the design of electronic books<br>
can transform plain text documents into learning tools. We will show a<br>
examples from CAST’s (Center for Applied Special Technology) digital<br>
learning environments and compare to current trends in eBook interface<br>
design.<br>

Bio:<br>
Boris Goldowsky is responsible for CAST's technology strategy and<br>
manages the organization’s system architecture, the design of modules<br>
and prototypes, and conducts ongoing research and development in next<br>
generation technologies. He is also CAST’s representative to the<br>
standards-setting working group for the DAISY (Digital Accessible<br>
Information System) digital talking book standard and a member of the<br>
NIMAS (National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard)<br>
Standards Board.<br>
<br>
Lisa Spitz, Director of Design, is responsible for planning and<br>
supervising the design of CAST’s universally designed learning<br>
environments, public facing websites, and organizational print<br>
collateral. With expertise in human-centered design principles and<br>
methodologies, she is passionate about enriching CAST led research<br>
prototypes through design-based research, a process through which<br>
iterative design cycles and interaction with students and teachers<br>
informs final design solutions. Lisa Spitz holds a B.A. in Psychology<br>
and Graphic Arts from Regis College, and a M.Des. in Interaction<br>
Design from Carnegie Mellon University.<br>
