Laptops to Lesotho conducted its first deployment of XO laptops at Nohana Primary School in Ketane, Lesotho, during November and December 2010. The deployment and training went very well. There is still more work to be done, but things went much better than we could have ever hoped. You can read a detailed report about what was accomplished at http://olpc2010-lesotho.blogspot.com/p/2010-trip-report.html. Note, this project is conducted independent of the official OLPC organization.

I deploy systems that depend on GPRS and generally there is not too bad gprs
coverage and functionality in most parts of southern africa (Lesotho is
particularly good).

In most parts of Nigeria it works fine, Kenia is generally not a problem.
Tanzania have some challenges...

You will have to check - problems are usually region or BTS (site specific)
but to get them sorted out , hey - this is Africa!

Hi Janissa,

I am very excited to learn about your Lesotho project. Especially regarding
the challenges you experienced with network and internet connections. I have
a business that builds data routers for NGO's in Africa and during my
participation with one NGO in Uganda and Mozambique I experienced some
interesting challenges regarding data infrastructure especially with GSM
signal levels, reliability of power, and availability of skilled maintenance
staff. It seems that due to the lack of commercial gain in rural areas, it
might even completely lack basic data transmission capabilities like GSM. My
goal is to determine whether the challenges I experienced were single
project related, or whether it was based on a real shortcoming in data
infrastructure.

Where are you based? In south Africa? If not could we maybe have a skype
chat to discuss challenges experienced?

Regards
Henk Boshoff.
