You should be getting a two second countdown after which linux boots and 
eventually sugar pops up.

Ok, interesting - I was guessing that you had a crashed grub but if it's 
interactive you can try:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz

followed by:

boot

Quite curious, haven't seen this before.
