across rivers to get to school every day.
These are just some of the dismal conditions facing children — despite
repeated promises by the government to improve conditions.
Things are especially desperate in the Eastern Cape, where more than
800 schools are in a state of disrepair.
At Ndlovayiphathwa Primary School in Libode, 251 pupils cram into
three crumbling mud huts, with only 15 desks. The school accommodates
pupils from Grade 1 to 4.

comes, they are made to stand to prevent them copying each other's
answers..."
