2014 March 12 Wednesday Dear Sameer, Aaron, and OLPC SF friends:
I hope all are well. Unfortunately, I am traveling and will not be able to join our monthly meeting on the 15th of March.
I am very sorry not to join you, because there is an important issue I would like to discuss.
The circulation by OLPC News of a headline -- GoodBye OLPC --is an unfortunate negative exaggeration of the current OLPC situation. We spent some time at the last meeting of OLPC SF analyzing and projecting this.
My suggestion was and is that we must acknowledge the redefinition of OLPC as the OLPC Movement, and ourselves as the OLPC Community.
The OLPC Movement may not last forever but is certainly at present lively and happening -- as shown on OLPC Map. The fact is that many experiements under the OLPC banner have succeeded, some have failed. The projected failure -- of the Florida based effort to create an OLPC Android based tablet for developed world children -- will not affect the ability of Haiti teachers to use the XO to teach math in Creole -- unless we let it.
Many members of the OLPC Community had said that the Florida effort would fail. Now it may have. Time to list the issues we need to work on, and begin to deal with them: spare parts for XO's, volunteer deployment, fundraising for individual deployments, copyright creative commons issues, etc. Let's get to work.
olpc San Francisco will be hosting our monthly meeting Saturday, March
15th, from 10AM - 1PM at the downtown SFSU campus, 835 Market Street,
Room 553.

Everyone is welcome to join us for our monthly meeting! We'll be
discussing the latest in olpc events and give updates on our local (and
global) projects. There will be plenty of XO laptops with the latest
builds to play around with, too.

This month we're going to kick off our meeting with project "needs
requests". Do you need help with your project? Do you have skills or
areas of expertise to help a project in need? Let us know and we'll
announce it at our meeting. We're hoping to get a temperature for what
needs our community is looking for and match people up with projects.

In addition, we're going to reserve some time at the end of the meeting
to break out into working groups, so feel free to bring your project and
recruit some volunteers!
