Carol Ruth Silver's FREEDOM RIDER DIARY: Smuggled Notes from Parchman Prison -- San Francisco Book Signing and LAUNCH!
(Book Signings also March 4 to March 10 in LA, NYC & Boston - look on Facebook and below)
This book is the prison diary kept, day by day for 40 days, by the author, as a young woman, arrested and imprisoned as a Freedom Rider. Freedom Riders were ordinary people, mostly young, both white and African-American, who challenged the system of segregation – apartheid – which had existed in the US South for almost a hundred years. Segregation preserved the power relationships between the freed African-Americans who had been slaves and their White former owners. In the two decades before the Freedom Rides, court challenges and education had eroded this system, but only around the edges. Armed with their belief in the equality of all persons, and with a decision of the US Supreme Court, the Freedom Riders boarded commercial buses, riding in small integrated groups, to challenge segregation in inter-state facilities in the deep South. They met violence, resistance, and incarceration.
Also Included:
--Photo essay edited by Claude A. Liggins, Freedom Rider
--Personal details of the author’s life before the Freedom Rides
--A short introduction by Ray Arsenault (same basis as for the PBS film Freedom Riders)
--Afterward by Cherie A. Gaines, an Oakland, CA African American attorney
