Dear Sameer and Working Group for OLPC-SF Community Summit, 21-23
October, 2011:
As I undertook, I checked out places to have a reception/party on
Saturday, after a hard day of all of us networking, conferring, teaching
and learning. The event will start at 5:30 PM, and be a short walk from
5th & Market. Here are the two best opportunities for consideration:
(1) At the Pickwick hotel, right around the corner on 5th, we could
have the Astor Room, with pleasant traditional decor, which serves up to
80 persons at a time. Beer and wine would be available for purchase (no
hard liquor). The food we would cater in, anything we chose, which
gives the opportunity to mix and match: we could have big sushi
platters from the place directly next door, a tenant of the Hotel and
accustomed to catering there, along with, from the other hotel cafe,
platters of the standards: deli meat and cheese, cut-up veggies and
dip, fruit with or without cheese, pizza or little sandwiches, and
pastries for desert. Cost: $400 just for the space, plus whatever we
choose for the food, probably another $1200 (figuring $15 minimum per 80
persons) or $1600. The food is, of course, variable. The hotel would
staff with one or more bar-tenders only, not someone to pass around the
food. The food would be sufficiently substantial that none but the real
eaters would want to go to dinner afterwards. Note: Wi-Fi is available.
(2) As suggested, I checked out Buca di Beppo, which is a very
popular Italian chain, located 2 & 1/2 blocks from the corner of 5th &
Market, at 855 Howard St, mid-block between 5th & 4th Sts. They can
accommodate up to 1,000 persons, and would give us a private space for
80 to 100 people for two hours -- 5:30 to 7:30/8:00 PM. Their bar
serves hard liquor as well as beer and wine. The food would be italian,
and their specialty is family style eating, so they could provide small
plates for pasta with meat sauce, veggie alternatives, pesto, alfredo,
etc., and/or standard hors d'oeuvres like meatballs, pigs-in-a-blanket,
cheese and salami, etc., and sweets. They do include soft drinks.
Their price is per person, and their standard rate is $22.95 per person,
or approximately $2400. for the whole thing, not including booze. The
food would be sufficiently substantial that none but the real eaters
would want to go to dinner afterwards. Note: Wi-Fi is NOT available.
(3) Other options: The Thai restaurant around the corner in the alley
is too small. The cafe in the Pickwick is too small and closes at 3:30
and they were not interested in opening for us. There are hotels and
restaurants across Market St which could be investigated if these two
opportunities are not good enough.
Best regards,
Carol Ruth Silver
