[OLPC-SF] how to install .ttf fonts on an XO and get a .pdf file to use them?

   on an XO how to get a .pdf file to use newly 
installed fonts (aka how to verify that fonts 
one thinks are newly installed really are)? 

i have .ttf fonts. 
using the terminal activity i changed to root user then 
# mkdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype 
# cp <sourcedir>/* /usr/share/fonts/truetype 
# fc-cache 
# fc-list | sort   # there they are 
# exit 
$ exit 

   start up browser, load a .pdf file that requires 
the newly installed fonts, no dice! little rectangles 
appear where fonts should be.
