Dear Professor Verma:
As you may or may not recall, I have been involved in trying to
bring education through technology to rural children without schools
in Afghanistan, with an organization called Master Teachers by
Satellite for Afghanistan (MTSA). Last year MTSA committed itself to
the OLPC XO as the absolutely best option for these children. Indeed,
it is the only option which has any chance of keeping them, some 4.5
million of them, from growing up illiterate as they do not have
schools, and even the most optimistic plans of the Ministry of
Education say they will not get them in the next 5 years.
We got one XO on the G1G1 plan (and had hoped to get another but
missed the 2008 G!G! program.)
I attended one SF OLPC event, which I found enormously helpful.
But I am still not able to make my XO log onto a wireless network,
such as my own, and I am very primitive in my ability to access even
the programs which I know are already loaded into it.
I intend to attend this Saturday’s OLPC-SF event, although a
prior commitment to the SF Sheriff’s Department, to represent the
Department on horseback in the St Patrick’s Day Parade, means that I
will only be able to stay for about an hour.
Thus I am writing to ask you:
Is there anyone you could tap who might be willing to meet me
earlier than the meeting, at 8:30 or 9:00 AM on Saturday, at SFSU, and
give me some tutorial help on making the XO really work?
This set of skills is very important as I anticipate going to
Washington to meet with funders, and need to be able to demonstrate to
them what it is we are talking about in the XO.
Thank you for your consideration. Either way, I look forward to
seeing you Saturday.
Sincerely,
Carol Ruth Silver
