Hi All,

I've used GoogleApps to setup an intranet site for my last organization and I do agree with some of
the comments below, it is quite useful. It satisfies most of the things that I listed on my last post and I
do prefer it over Yahoo Groups (since I am pretty happy with gmail so far). Thanks Naz for your inputs and
I cast my vote for that plan of action.

In would be awesome if we could get someone to do the olpc.ph site. Just glossed over the Nepal
site that Naz mentioned and I like it. The site is uncluttered and focused on the content rather than fluffy graphics.
The organization itself seemed to have a wider focus than what we want to achieve, but that topic can be
discussd in the meeting. If we focus on just getting the main objective of the umbrella OLPC organization,
can we possibly share some of its contents (logo, etc.) and maybe tweek them a bit to "Filipinize" it?
Marketing-wise and time-wise this might be a better move since we are still pretty much unknown so
having an already identifiable logo links us to the main organization for now until we can get more
press time and spin off our own logo. But I digress, let's focus on forming the organization first. Sorry.
BTW,let me know if PhilWeavers won't be able to do it...I'd like to take a crack at doing the site. No charge
folks...hehehe.

Peace out!
---Cherry

On Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 8:51 PM, <olpc-philippines-request@lists.laptop.org> wrote:
Hi All,

I guess we have to start with this topic before we could even begin to
organize. Since I won't be
available for the meeting I'd like to put in my input now.

I am a fan of Google, but I would caution us from adopting yet again another
form of communication.
As it is, we have the following lines of communication:
1) OLPC-Philippines Mailing List & Wiki Site
2) Facebook Site
3) OLPC-Philippines Multiply site
4) #olpcph channel for chat
5) Chief Mike's Blog
6) We'll likely to have our own PR site: www.olpc.ph

Here's another thing to consider: Should we have a separate line of
communication from the developer's group? We don't want to be inundated
with e-mails about recent builds, etc. as their efforts ramp up.

We can look at pros and cons for each site. We're likely to keep 3 or 4 of
the above, but it would be nice to narrow this down to 2 (we can have a link
to the Pilot school progress via Chief Mike's Blog). But just to brainstorm
what we need for choosing a candidate program for our organization, given
that we're a global one:

1) We need a program with a discussion board that's visible to everyone, and
a way for members to elect whether they'd want a per post update or
just as we log-in update.
2) A way to poll our members say come election time or just to vote on
issues.
3) A way to archive meeting minutes.
4) A way to see which members are available to chat and be able to chat on
the fly without having to go to a separate site.
5) A calendar
6) A file depository so members can pull documents, etc.

If that's Google Groups so be it. Sandeep, you're more familiar with
facebook... are there separate applications that we can
get from facebook to satisfy most of the above? This would be ideal since
there are already 220 members in there and it would be
a pain to get people to move.

Just my two cents. I'll poke around each of the programs above and other
programs (Google Group. Yahoo Group, etc. ) and will try to come up with a
pros and cons list before the meeting.

Cheers,
Another thing to consider is that olpc-philippines@lists.laptop.org is
publicly archived on the web and if there are sensitive internal
matters that must be discussed online, anything said in here will turn
up on Google searches. So I think there's a need for a private list.

1) We can go mailman on www.olpc.ph, the same mailing list manager
we're using right now in this list.
2) We can go Google Groups (Ryan just set up one)
3) We can go Yahoo Groups which is what most Filipinos use; most of us
have Yahoo accounts because a lot of us were early social netwrok
adopters and users of E-groups before it was bought by Yahoo and
rebranded as Yahoo groups.

The social network pages like for Facebook and Multiply should just be
to augment advocacy and create awareness. http://www.olpc.ph should
really be the centralized rallying point for the group, kinda like
http://www.olenepal.org/ for Nepal.

I'm going to see if anyone at Philweavers, the oldest Web Designer org
here in the Philippines, wants to volunteer for chipping for the
development of the OLPC.ph website. The XO-1 unit I brought during the
Philweavers December Christmas party created quite a buzz, and a lot
of photo ops and picture taking with it happened ;)

All the best,
I think we can do everything in with regards to collaboration using an
external service like Google Apps which I've pointed the olpc.ph email
at the moment. It already has the collaboration tools needed - not as
complex as groupware but still functional. I think this is useful for
a small group to collaborate and focus on certain topics without
creeping to the other stuff.

Then we can just use this mailing list for announce and other tech
stuff along with the wiki page which is pretty much the olpc wiki in
general. The rest are just for creating social awareness and does not
need to be the main focus.

I am more inclined to use it with Google Apps/Groups rather than Yahoo
groups only because I don't want to have multiple login accounts for
the same kind of work/information that I expect to do/receive.
Coolness.

I already sent a shout-out to Philweavers for web developer/designer
volunteers and help out with the olpc.ph site. We really need a
central repository for coordinating all activities and olpc.ph gives
the best branding/recall.

Google apps sounds good given the the toolset. Given our limited
resources, let's not reinvent the wheel wherever it's not necessary.
Hi Ryan,

I don't have any issue with starting the Google group. What's more important
is having a unified means of communicating to a team (ie developers) or to
the larger audience. Best to discuss during the Jan 31 meeting.

Safe travels.

Cheers,
Sandeep
