Greetings! My name is Esther Jeong and I am a new eKindling volunteer. Born
and raised in NYC, I have spent the past year researching in Asia and am
currently staying in the Philippines. Although I have no ancestral ties with
the Philippines, I developed a strong affinity for this beautiful and
diverse country and continue to fall in love with sweet desserts like
halo-halo. As an advocate for creative education programming and community
development, I am excited to be a part of this growing community and dynamic
project! Going forward, I will be sending the eKindling updates. Enjoy!

*SOFTWARE FREEDOM DAY
*

On September 19, 2009, Jerome Gotangco and Rowen Iral represented eKindling
and One Laptop Per Child at the Software Freedom Day event (SFD), which took
place at the National Computer Center in Quezon City. In addition to
participating in the global celebration of SFD, the duo increased awareness
about eKindling’s mission, OLPC and Sugar. Five visitors even requested to
convert the USBs into SoaS and we were also noticed by a GMA news reporter!
Check out pictures from this event at:

Special thanks to Ray B. of Asia Pacific College, Rommel and Noel Feria of
University of the Philippines for helping out! Our eKindling community is
certainly growing!

*Y4iT: YOUTH CONGRESS FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY*

On September 10, 2009, Sandeep Chandiramani, Jerome Gotangco and Ryan
Letada represented eKindling at Y4it – an annual IT event that attracted
more than 20,000 delegates from colleges and private institutions across the
Philippines. In front of a 100+ audience, members of the core team presented
Sugar and eKindling’s mission. At this event, we also encouraged students to
create applications and content for the Sugar Operating System. Luckily, we
had positive responses from the crowd. We even had two provincial colleges
express their interest in future collaborations to help create educational
content for Filipino Children! For pictures, check here:

Special thanks to Sabrina Par (UPIS teacher and Y4iT speaker), Rommel Feria
(UP Professor and Y4iT speaker), and Jaime Cairo (UP Computer Science Chair
and organizer) for expressing interest in helping with our OLPC cause!

*eKindling BLOG LAUNCH!*

Everyone else is blogging – we should blog as well! As we continue to work
on our website, we thought that it would be great to share our success,
challenges, and experience on our very own blog. So, here it is:

*SQUEAKFEST: Etoys – CHILDREN PRODUCING RATHER THAN CONSUMING KNOWLEGE!
*

We are an education project, not simply a laptop project! Understanding the
importance of educational content and application is the prerequisite of a
successful OLPC deployment. With this in mind, Cherry Wither went to
Squeakfest in Los Angeles and set out to learn about Etoys and how it can be
applied to the Philippine educational context. Her most important finding:
Children can not only consume knowledge, but they can produce it as well! To
learn more about her experience, click
